WHAT THE MLKHP IS ABOUT:
The MLK Humanity Project, aka MLKHP, is a grassroots nonprofit organization aimed at “Empowering Others To Empower Themselves!” At our fundamental core, we are actively working to assist and inspire our less fortunate brothers and sisters who have found themselves homeless or close to it. Having personal experience with homelessness myself (Ché Walton), it’s something that can be very overwhelming and defeating if you allow it to be. Having battled a serious alcohol addiction, severe depression, criminal justice entanglements, and all that comes with those issues, I can say with absolute certainty that it’s a hard road back, but’s it’s achievable. Through a transparent and nonjudgmental approach, we slowly build individual relationships with our recipients. Doing so helps us to try and help find the necessary resources or prospects best suited for the needs of each individual. By providing basic needs items including food and toiletries, but not limited to just those, we offer stability and the ability for our friends to start saving money towards better pursuits. In the end it’s all about choices, and ultimately that’s always gonna be left to the individual!!
SACK LUNCH PROGRAM
The MLK Humanity Project Sack Lunch Program is weekly outing through which we provide sack lunches and basic needs items. The sack lunches themselves are made with care and are very consistent with regards to content. We offer a selection of sandwiches with the sack lunches, such as peanut butter and jelly sandwich sack lunch or a roasted turkey sack lunch. To receive a lunch, one must make a choice. It’s designed to get people to exercise their agency. In addition we provide toiletries, both loose and in toiletry bags (some bags are provided by Vallejo nonprofit Project Blessing Bags), BOMBAS Socks and assorted socks, clothing, pet items (MLKHP Pet Program), baby items, books, information, and much more. As involved as it all seems, the Sack Lunch Program is very smooth operationally, and is the primary foundation for how we meet new people, and begin to build working relationships with them.

HEALTHY START BREAKFAST PROGRAM
The Healthy Start Breakfast Program was originally started in 2018, but proved to be too much too maintain at the time, from an operational and financial sustainability aspect. However, it is back and better than ever. It is a weekly outing, usually on Tuesdays, that allows us to update our friends on any current events, as well as to inform new people of our other services, primarily the Saturday Sack Lunch Program. With an option of cinnamon raisin oatmeal or egg and cheese tortilla wraps, the breakfast are designed to be a healthy as possible and not too heavy. The breakfast program is a very quick operation and not as long or involved as the Sack Lunch Program. However, we do take a limited amount of toiletries and basic needs items, as well as pet products, for emergency purposes only.

MLKHP PET PROGRAM
The MLKHP Pet Program is a complimentary program to primarily the Sack Lunch Program, through which we provide food, water, and pet items such as collars and leashes, etc. The program came to be as a direct result of not having one when we came across a gentleman who was willing to give his sack lunch to his puppy. Moved by the gesture, we immediately decided to start providing pet food, water, and basic pet items. Over the course of time, we have rescued and even fostered animals (very short term 2-3 days). We even adopted that original puppy, as she was hit by a car and ultimately needed to have a limb removed, requiring aftercare tgst was all but impossible in the streets. Almost as old as the sack lunch program, the Pet Program is integral to our attempts to build trusting relationships. We understand the bond of pets and their owners, having pets ourselves, including 2 rescues. Our friend’s furry friend are very good for mental stability and comfort, as many of the pets offer love that might otherwise be nonexistent in the lives of many of our friends who not only own them, but love them like family!

MLK FAMILY & FRIENDS PROGRAM
The MLK FAMILY & FRIENDS PROGRAM was formed to address the needs of our more consistent recipients. It is a program designed expressly to build a profile for our friends who choose to engage in the process. By joining the program, it automatically prioritizes the member in situations that come down to a coin toss type of scenario. Scenarios we try painstakingly to avoid. Through the program, members can schedule appointments to meet, receive meals and goods on days other than our scheduled outings. In addition we are always receiving goods in limited quantities, and those would be offered to members first, and then to all others who are waiting to receive normal services at any given location. Keep in mind that everyone, regardless of participation in thus program, will receive a lunch and all that comes with them, including toiletries, clothing, etc. The biggest difference is the amount of personal time we will invest is and will be greater for members, as opposed to nonmember, most of whom aren’t faces that we encounter in a regular basis. Through the program and our ability to focus more on the individual’s immediate and long terms goals and needs, we are finding a modest success rate as it pertains to our participants transitioning back into a state of self sufficiency!! It works as much as the individual is willing to work at it.
